New Years Resolutions: Tea-Toxing

I have never been a fan of any kind of ‘cleanse’, ‘detox’ or pill that claims to detox the system and wash away toxins and unnecessary waste that the body produces. There is no published research anywhere that says these types of cleanses or detoxes are safe and/or effective, so I have always attempted to stay healthy the natural way- by eating clean and staying active. People hear the word ‘teatox’ and immediately think that tea and detox are two words that go together, when there are many warning signs and factors to be aware of. Detox teas can interact with the effectiveness and/or the absorption of certain medications, and also may contain ingredients that could have a profound effect on the body, an example being the senna leaf which treats constipation before a colonoscopy and is found in the majority of tea cleanses.

Many people are also under the misconception that tea-toxes promote weight loss. Many tea-toxes do not indicate to consumers that their main function is not to lose weight, but instead clean out the system (which does not directly mean lose weight). Since I am an avid tea drinker, I did some research on tea-toxes to find out if there were any on the market that actually claim they are not for weight loss, and that seem legitimately good enough to try.

I came across a brand from Chilliwack, B.C. called New Moon CO that just came out with a three-part Herbal Cleanse. I have not yet tried this out or even ordered it so I cannot give a full opinion on its effectiveness, but I can give an opinion on the item itself and its presentation on the website.

The first thing that caught my attention about this herbal cleanse was the fact that it comes in three parts as opposed to one. I have also never seen a tea-tox that comes in three parts with a before, during and after type of deal. The article clearly states that the detox is “geared towards cleansing the blood, supporting the liver and kidneys and replenishing your system.” It does not claim anywhere that this product is used for weight loss. It then dives into explaining exactly what toxins are and how your body breaks them down. It explains the key ingredients in each level of the herbal cleanse, as well as explaining the function of the herbal cleanse at each level and exactly what you are supposed to do.

I have researched other tea-toxes and herbal cleanses and many actually market their products as “Weight Loss Products”. New Moon Tea only claims that this product is meant to cleanse the blood, liver and kidneys. I also am a huge fan of the list of ingredients, as anyone trying this cleanse out may be allergic to a certain ingredient and can bring this list directly to their doctor to find out if it is safe for them to use.

The three levels of the herbal cleanse which I retrieved from their website <> are as follows:

It is important to strengthen the liver before you start a detox, cleanse or weight loss diet. Do not over load your liver with the extra work on top of all the other important things it does.
Remove excess toxins and balance your body’s natural substances. This tea will cleanse the blood and expel waste, breakdown toxins and support the kidneys and liver. Its diuretic properties will eliminate toxins with out leaching out important nutrients.
Packed full of antioxidants which help protect against damaging free radicals while continuing to help support your systems and adding vitamins and nutrients.

Other products I have researched include accessories such as shakers or thermoses to hold the tea in, but I actually prefer that New Moon does not do so, because to me that type of marketing seems like a mere advertisement of the tea brand instead of a legitimate product meant to help consumers. New Moon genuinely cares about educating consumers on the contents of their products and what has gone into them.

It also helps that the teas are organic, gluten-free, caffeine-free, and blended by hand. Many other tea-toxes or herbal tea cleanses do not have these same qualities and are manufactured by a large-scale company. New Moon started as an Etsy shop by a couple with a horticulturist and herbalist background, so you know that the product you are trying out was created by someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.

If I were to order an herbal cleanse, this would be the winner!
