I could count on both hands the number of people in my life who are not huge fans of receiving actual cakes for their birthdays. Whether its because of the icing, they can’t decide on chocolate or vanilla, or they are on a diet 24/7 and don’t want the extra carbs; there is always someone who would prefer not to have a cake. Instead of skipping the idea of birthday cake altogether for these loved ones, why not still make them a cake, but just in a different style?
I first got the idea for a beer can birthday cake when I threw my friend a surprise birthday party, who would probably choose beer over water any day. I had thrown a couple of surprise birthday parties that year and noticed that the cake would either be left half eaten or barely touched at all. Maybe that’s because we’re all early-mid twenties and people would rather have a beer in their hands than a knife, or maybe people don’t want to fill up on sugar before partying; I really don’t know.
The idea is to create the outline of a cake with beer cans, or wine, or whatever beverage suits the receiver best. My friend is an avid beer drinker, so I asked each party guest to bring at least one tall boy beer can to add to the cake. By the time everyone arrived, we had enough beer cans to build 3 layers of the ‘cake’
In our case, we had a couple different sizes of beer cans so we used a ‘Happy Birthday’ sign to hold the cans together. We also used a plastic plate to pile the cans on top of each other to make it easier. You could use string, fancy tape, etc. to hold this cake together. Get creative!
You could do this kind of cake in SO many variations. You could stack Coca-Cola cans on top of one another if the recipient doesn’t drink alcohol, you could use cardboard boxes to pile the booze on top of each other. You can personalize this cake to any kind of beverage. You could do a vodka cooler cake, a tea cake, a wine bottle cake, even a cake for the person who can’t decide on just one type of alcoholic beverage.
I love giving this type of gift for surprise birthdays especially, because the birthday person doesn’t need to worry about getting alcohol for the night (or running out of alcohol). It also beats having to clean up a messy cake and be left with a house of dirty dishes!
The best idea for all the wine lovers out there is to include a couple of empty bottles of wine and stick candles in the bottles, so you have yourself an actual birthday wine bottle cake!
Have fun with this idea!
